The greatest musical in the history of cinema? That's the general opinion and its fame is established. But it's also a wonderful tribute to the Seventh Art and the troubled transition from silent to sound at the end of the 1920s, which is the basis for some of the film's best gags. It's also an anthology of the great melodies of that time, including the one that gives the film its title, with a final dance that pays homage to Busby Berkeley's choreography. The dance between Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse in Technicolor green in the Broadway Melody Ballet sequence is one of the actress's great appearances before meeting Vincente Minnelli in THE BAND WAGON and BRIGADOON.
