InShadow at Espaço Santa Catarina

Yesterday we opened a series of photographic exhibitions, two art installations and a video-dance collection shown on loop at Espaço Santa Catarina. The opening was marked by the return of Kieli Bi, a film by Dana Mussa, to InShadow. After its appearance at the Festival in 2020, the Kazakh artist's film was shown again and saw its essence materialise off-screen.

Kieli Bi, the name of a sacred dance in the Kazakh language, is a film that exalts the body and spirit of women. Through dance, it portrays Dana Mussa's spiritual journey on her return to Kazakhstan after an eight-year absence working as a dancer in Paris. The viewer is thus taken on a journey through time and space to a time when women were free; when they were the Hunters, Knights, Amazons, Shamans, Priestesses, Queens and Goddesses.

After the screening, Dana Mussa gave a beautiful performance in which she tried to give the movement on the screen a new lease of life, extending the film narrative developed by the artist in a vibrant and engaging way.

After this, our Co-Artistic Director, Pedro Sena Nunes, took everyone on a tour of the photographic exhibitions and installations on display at Espaço Santa Catarina, giving their creators the opportunity to explain the concepts behind their work.

Discover each of the exhibitions and installations on display:

METAMORFOSE DE UMA IDENTIDADE Laura Bosne | PT

Enter Laura Bosne's mind and accompany her in her process of depersonalisation towards a metamorphosis of being. A (re)discovery of the self. "Metamorphosis of an Identity" evokes a reflection on the self-knowledge made possible by solitude.

AUTORRETRATO - Eduardo Melo | PT

"Self-Portrait" is a photographic exhibition that explores Eduardo Melo's conflict with the construction of his own identity. The result of deep introspection, this project emphasises the discovery and acceptance of the self.

640/20 - Eliana Costa | PT

Born out of a process of self-understanding and confrontation with the truth, 640/20 is a visual account of the emotions and marks left by a childhood dominated by pain and silence. This exhibition is a reflection on the invisibility of violence and the importance of breaking cycles of suffering.

MOVIMENTO EM CONCRETO - Paulo Sales Vieira | PT

The artist invites us to reflect on the relationship between the body and urban space. Capturing various moments of interaction between an individual and a concrete wall, Movement in Concrete explores the binomials movement-rigidity, resistance-vulnerability, body-space, colour-texture.

INSTALAÇÃO VÍDEO -  Ana David | PT

This installation features the presentation of two videograms on a monitor, in a looped sequence:

Fronteiras 6’

A videodance materialised as an experimental and hybrid project. The narrative takes place in the nightmare of a dancer who finds herself being chased by Don Quixote and his iron horses. The plot is built on images from significant films in the history of cinema, such as Akira Kurosawa's Run, Victor Flaming's The Wizard of Oz and Michael Powel's The Red Shoes, as well as interspersed shots from ‘Video Signal’.

Primórdios 6’

This project is the result of a workshop held at the Encontros Acarte, dedicated to Videodance. The project involves a performer/camera duo to develop a work of spontaneous creation, using improvisation to establish a relationship between the camera and the body, the director and the performer.

INSTALAÇÃO INTERATIVA - Ana David | PT

Piece 1: Giróscopio

Giróscopio allows for an unstable projection of projection glass, creating a visual discourse that is constantly reconfigured.

Piece 2: Myriorama

A panoramic image derived from a children's game of landscape construction, altering geographies and recreating landscapes.

Piece 3: A espera

This installation combines a Projection Lantern with a digitised image of William Blake, exploring the uncertainty of a character who gets lost or hesitates to enter the scene.

In addition to the exhibitions and installations, visitors at Espaço Santa Catarina can also explore a video-dance collection played on a loop, featuring the films:
