“Gaji maseyo, eomma!” (“Mother, don't go!”) — is a phrase uttered by Korean sons and daughters whose mothers work as Haenyeo. It refers to the so-called “women of the sea”; traditional divers in southern Korea, renowned for their resilience and determination, relying on the technique of free diving. The expression of children asking their mothers not to go to sea reflects not only affection, but also awareness of the risks involved in this ancestral practice. The study of the trajectory of the Haenyeo allows for a profound reflection on female resistance, cultural identity, the transmission of knowledge, and intergenerational relationships in contexts of tradition and social transformation.
