THE IMPORTANCE OF THE EMOTIONAL CONNECTIVITY OF VISUAL STORYTELLING Sam Asaert
Storytelling Masterclass
27 November | 10am to 11.30am
ETIC - Escola de Tecnologias, Inovação e Criação
In this masterclass, intended for anyone interested or engaged within the fields of visual art and visual communication, award-winning visual artist and storyteller Sam Asaert zooms in on the versatility and emotional importance of visual storytelling.
By showcasing a variety of the various projects that Sam has realised throughout his international career, this masterclass highlights the expressive and narrative possibilities of both artistic as well as journalistic visual communication and storytelling.
Supported by examples of his own photography and film work, Sam walks us through his creation process. In doing so he will highlight how he approaches his subjects, how he engages with stories and projects, and how visual art is an alibi to transform personal interest into expressive and informative storytelling.
Sam will speak about the versatility of storytelling – from still photography to motion pictures, illustration to literature – and how its immersive nature can have an impact on the world around by transforming it into engaging and captivating visuals.
Sam will zoom in on his work as a journalist – speaking about and showcasing his work in Iran, Ukraine, Palestine, and Portugal – as well as his artistic work – speaking about and showcasing for example work he has made with different dance companies.
In this masterclass, Sam will illustrate how every form of creative storytelling that conjures up images can thus possess immense power; visual art as a way to demolish (long-standing) cultural walls and build connective bridges that empathise with “the other” or the unfamiliar.
