Workshop Video and Dance

2 December | 7pm to 9.30am

Estúdios Pro.Dança

In this workshop, intended for anyone interested or engaged within the crossroads of dance and film, award-winning visual artist Sam Asaert will present a practical approach to translating dance, from an ephemeral medium, into dance cinema, which is a timeless medium.

Using a camera, which broadcasts a live image to a screen, Sam will work with two dancers in order to highlight the enormous variety of visual possibilities in the translation of dance into dance cinema.

The two dancers will perform one short piece of choreography – a phrase of perhaps only 15 seconds. This choreographic phrase then becomes the blueprint with which Sam will illustrate – through the live broadcasting camera – the visual and emotional possibilities that cinema offers to dance, which the theatre stage cannot. Sam will engage with the workshop participants to put on the live-screen a variety of cinematic approaches to the same choreographic phrase. A different emotional intent will form the base for a different approach.

Sam will guide willing participants into the process of approaching dance with cinematic tools and know-how.

The dancers perform, the camera registers, the participants watch and interact
