The 16th edition of InShadow - Lisbon Screendance Festival is in full swing. Until the 15th of December, the capital's only videodance festival promises to move the city with an innovative programme that includes videodance, documentary, animation, performances and visual arts.
Museu da Marioneta, Teatro do Bairro, Cinemateca Portuguesa, Gallery and Cisterna of Faculty of Fine Arts of University of Lisbon (FBAUL), hub multidisciplinar SAFRA and Casa do Comum are some of the venues in which this initiative by Vo'Arte is taking place, giving stage to a series of proposals that highlight the "constant flirtation between the body and the image", as Pedro Sena Nunes, the Festival's Co-Artistic Director, emphasises.
"Reaching the 16th edition is a moment of absolute magic for us. Above all, it's a work of resistance and resilience. Of excitement, passion and dedication. The great challenge is to rediscover, year after year, ways of preserving our essence, our reason for being. We want InShadow to continue to be original, different. To bring questioning, thought and the correlation of themes. To continue attracting audiences and artists to unconventional places", he says.
Over the years, the Festival has seen an exponential increase in the quality of the proposals submitted by artists. From a creative point of view, the projects are innovative in their technical and aesthetic approach. From a narrative point of view, the conciseness with which the messages are worked out and the current nature of the themes addressed stand out.
This edition is no exception. One of the highlights is Marlene Millar, a Canadian director with a remarkable body of work. Her presence in Lisbon will be marked by the videodance workshops Making Dance Films, held on the 28th of November at the School of Technology, Innovation and Creation (ETIC), and Collaboration in Creation Dance Film, which takes place on the 29th of November at the Biblioteca de Alcântara - José Dias Coelho. The artist's visit to InShadow also includes the screening of the films Pilgrimage, in a special session taking place on the 25th of November at Chapitô, and MABOUNGOU: Being in the World, a co-directed film with Philip Szporer that is among the competitors in the Festival's Documentary Competition, taking place between the 16th and 24th of November at Casa do Comum. The artist is also a member of this year's Official Jury.
Another highlight is Sam Asaert, Belgian photographer and director, who will have a presence very similar to Millar. As part of the Official Jury, he will give the masterclass The importance of the emotional connectivity of visual storytelling, on the 29th of November, at ETIC, and the video-dance workshop Interactive dance filmmaking, on the 2nd of December, at Esúdios Pro.Dança. The artist will also be inaugurating the exhibition Discernerable Beauty, which will be on display at the Gallery of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon (FBAUL) between the 3rd and 19th of December.
The Spanish dance company Baal also came to the Museu da Marioneta with their performance Space Travellers. Presented between the 7th and 10th of November, the project is part of LittleShadow, the section of the Festival dedicated to children. "We want to be transgenerational and that's why we create these moments so that children can also be inebriated by the world of movement, images and the body", explains Pedro Sena Nunes.
The Festival's artistic director also highlights the premiere of the performance The Heroine's Journey, by Anouk Froidevaux, presented on the 15th and 16th of November at the Biblioteca de Alcântara - José Dias Coelho, and Sopro, a choreographic creation by CiM - Companhia de Dança.
