InShadow at Espaço Cultural Mercês

Yesterday was marked by the opening of another space of our programme - the Espaço Cultural Mercês (Mercês Cultural Space), where, until the 9th of December, you can visit a series of photographic exhibitions, an artistic installation and watch a videodance collection displayed on a loop.

At InShadow, we don't just focus on cinema and dance. Photography and other proposals that explore the intimate relationship between the body and technology are also part of our genesis.

To this end, we seek to create spaces that allow us to promote and publicise the visions of established and emerging artists, making their projects known to our audiences. The Espaço Cultural Mercês is a clear example of this effort.

As was the case at Espaço Santa Catarina, the opening of this space was marked by a performance and a conversation with some of the authors of the projects that will be exhibited there over the next few weeks - Jéssica Durães, João Pedro Rodrigues and Joana Franco.

Discover the constellation of artistic proposals on display at Espaço Cultural Mercês:

NATUREZA HUMANA (HUMAN NATURE) - Jéssica Durães | PT

A photographic expression in which the artist visually and conceptually compares the human body with nature. In this project, the photographer demonstrates the identical parts of these two worlds, putting the viewer in a state of reflection on the symbiotic relationship between the human body and the natural environment. The photographs reveal how certain patterns repeat themselves, showing the deep connection between man and nature.

ESPÍRITO LIVRE (FREE SPIRIT) - João Pedro Rodrigues | PT

Based on the Nietzschean concept of Free Spirit, the photographer has put together a set of photographs of bodies in movement, bodies in action. For him, the choreography of Human Revolution, a CiM creation, evokes the idea of the Free Spirit.

"He who has come only in part to a freedom of reason cannot feel on earth otherwise than as a wanderer-though not as a traveler towards a final goal, for this does not exist. But he does want to observe, and keep his eyes open for everything that actually occurs in the world; therefore he must not attach his heart too firmly to any individual thing; there must be something wandering within him, which takes its joy in change and transitoriness."

Nietzsche - Human, All Too Human

HORIZONTE DE LIBERDADE  (HORIZON OF FREEDOM) - Paulo Sales Vieira | PT

In this serene composition, the photograph captures a moment of introspection and connection, where vulnerability meets the strength of the landscape. An individual standing on an immense rock contemplates the vast, open horizon, symbolising the fusion between human and nature.

KAPUT!  - Joana Franco | PT

Kaput! is a set of records and experiments that reduce dance to a choreography of points in space. The project presents systematic representations of bodies and movements, between more or less geometric graphics and apparently mathematical expressions. These concepts are brought together in a geometric mirror and a ‘generator’ of choreographic prototypes, which can be customised by visitors.

The exhibition (choreographic laboratory) is made up of a mural of diagrams drawn up during the conceptual development of Kaput! and two interactive objects: a machine that produces choreographic graphics from the data entered, and an interactive projection that transforms the body into a stickman.

The inauguration of Espaço Cultural Mercês featured a performance of Kaput!, during which Joana Franco presented a solo choreography made up of 324 possible combinations of movements between 3 parts of the body.

In addition to the exhibitions and installations, visitors can also explore a videodance collection played on a loop, which includes the films:
